I have worked for almost 3 years on tracing my uncle’s B-17 crew, lost on 2/22/1944 after a mission over Bernburg, Germany. I was about to find out who these men were, and learn about how they died. Little did I realize where this quest would take me, and the people I would meet along the way. People from countries far from my home town, people that were related to the crew members, the surprising unexpected twists that led to one man’s death and another man’s survival, and the great contributions from “Moofy,” a wonderful woman in England, and Ed, an outstanding man in Belgium, that led to actually finding that surviving crewman. This adventure actually started out to simply find the photo of my uncle”s B-17 crew. Because the photo eluded me for more than six months my research files grew to a point that the story actually began to write itself. Probably the most surprising happening was to finally track down the crew photo in a shoebox held by a family, and in a state, with no relation to any of the crew members.
